Facility summary
Key future considerations
- Asset at end of life.
- Non-contemporary design limiting participation opportunities.
- Extremely small catchment not conducive to supporting the viability of an aquatic centre.
- Minimal visitor-draw to the area from outside of Babinda.
- Relatively close proximity to Babinda Boulders, which provides alternative recreational aquatic opportunities for the community.
- Extremely low visitation (by far the lowest in the aquatic network).
- Very high cost per visit to Council
($71.23/visit - compared to $1.74/ visit at Tobruk Memorial pool)
Options for the facility
Due to its aging infrastructure, non-compliance with current standards, very low demand combined with very high maintenance and running costs, the draft Aquatic Strategy proposes that the Babinda Pool be decommissioned as it reaches its end of life, or when it becomes unsafe to use.
What happens if the pool is closed?
For those currently using the pool, Babinda Boulders and Bramston beach are viable alternatives for recreational swimming. The closest lap pool will be Gordonvale.
If the pool is closed we could reallocate funds to other recreational infrastructure like the renewal of ANZAC PARK in Babinda.
Council will work with the Babinda community to explore ideas for enhancing ANZAC Park and the former pool site, such as improved open space, play options or other community-led ideas. No decisions have been made.
Stage 1 Concept - ANZAC Park Renewal
The ANZAC Park Renewal Stage 1 project presents an opportunity for Council investment that benefits the broader community in Babinda.
Project timeline
Stage 1 of the re-development is scheduled to be completed by 2027.
